Mac OS: Dictionary App Loses Scroll Bar When Viewing Wikipedia Articles

by Eric Pena on May 25, 2010

Dictionary.app

You don’t know the real value of something until you lose it.

If you use the Dictionary.app in Mac as much as I do, then you’re sure to notice something’s wrong with it. The scroll bar isn’t displayed on the right-side of the Dictionary window when viewing Wikipedia articles. I noticed this a few days ago and I thought the program got corrupted somehow. Well, there’s nothing wrong with the app. Wikipedia.org rolled out new features recently that somehow screwed up the integration with the Dictionary application in Mac. So the solution is to turn-off the new features in Wikipedia.org.

Step 1.
Close the Dictionary application.
Open the Safari Browser (may not work with other browsers).
Go to the Wikipedia.org main page.

Step 2.
Log in to your account (create a new account if you don’t have one).
Check the option Remember me (up to 30 days)

Step 3. Click on New features at the top of the page.

Step 4. Turn off the new features by scrolling to the bottom of the page to where it says Turn me back!.

Step 5. Click the Turn new features off button.

Step 6. Open the Dictionary.app. The scroll-bar should now be visible when viewing Wikipedia articles.

Note: If somehow your Safari’s cache gets deleted or your login details expire, you may need to do this all over again.

Now imagine you lost everything you have–and got them all back again!

Lesson: Be happy with what you have.

Not working 10.6.3 or at least not functional. I have my scroll bar showing when I shrink the disctionary app window but the scrolling handle is not proportional to the content to be displayed which gets ignored. The only way to scroll don is actually to select the text in the window and drag the mouse up or down until you can read more content… what a hack and what a piece of crap app… another of the new sub-par Apple work failing because they let it fall off the radar, less iPads more quality please… they don't make apples like they used to ;D

Didn't work for me until I used Safari. Strange…

My Wikipedia login expired 30 days after and I lost the scroll bar again. I just went back to wikipedia.org and re-login and got the Dictionary scroll bar again.

Note: I was using Firefox so at first it didn't work until I remembered to use Safari. :-)

Backup iPhone/iPhone 3G/iPhone 3GS/iPhone 4 SMS to PC

I used “Tansee iPhone Transfer” to transfer the iPhone SMS to computer as a txt file or ANTS file. What’s more, with “Tansee iPhone Transfer”, I can protect the file with a password to keep my privacy. But I free to use in: ( http://hotdownloads.com/trialware/download/Download_tanseeiphonesms_.exe?item=13181-11&;;affiliate=406676 )

It allows me free to use for a long time.

Blame Apple for using a rather lazy mathod of scrapping Wikipedia’s content into their applications.
Instead of loading it with an API, they use Safari’s loader which means it’s skin-dependant, user-dependant and style-dependant.
