BMW Builds a Shape-Shifting Car Out of Cloth

June 30th, 2008 | Comments | Posted in Design

BMW isn’t known as the ultimate driving machine for nothing. I recently got my first BMW, albeit a used 316i sedan, and since then I’ve been hooked. Someday, when I win the super lotto or my boss finally decides to give me a raise, the first thing I’ll do is visit the nearest BMW dealership and drive away with a brand new, leather smelling car… or one that smells like my pajamas will do just fine.

New Mysticus 10.5.3 v1.4b Combo Update for Hackintosh

June 30th, 2008 | Comments | Posted in Hackintosh

For those of you who followed my last Hackintosh tutorial and continues to encounter problems, Mysticus has come up with a new update–version 1.4b.

Here are the changes in 1.4b:

a) Most if not all errors have been fixed!
b) No more terminal error, or deletion of login… terminal works just fine after update
c) No suid errors! no ahci error (if used with compatible systems, no jmicron ids added, so you may need to add them by yourself to test, other than that, it should work with all ICH controllers…) no hdd icon errors..
d) Package backups entire extensions (drivers) folder to /backupkexts so if you wanna restore your working acpi? or audio? or network? just replace the files from your backup folder to extensions folder afterwards so that you wont have any problems afterwards…
e) By default if no kernel choosen, it will install 9.2.0 sleep kernel 9.2.0 system.kext (so there should not be any usb mount issues unless you do some manual changes by your self, to kernel/system.kext or u have left pcgenusbehci driver in iousbfamily/contents/plugins/ which will cause conflict!)

Follow this link to his thread in InsanelyMac and click on the little emoticon with the trumpet to download the 10.5.3 Combo Update Package v1.4b and try it out.

Good luck guys. Hope you finally get your own Hackintosh up and running.

Google: “Don’t Be Evil”

June 27th, 2008 | Comments | Posted in Video

When I first had access to the Internet in the mid 90s, Google was non-existent. Popular search engines then were Excite, Alta Vista, Infoseek, Lycos and of course Yahoo! Well, except for Yahoo, the other web search engine pioneers may now be unheard of today. I learned about Google in 1999 and since then it has become my default search engine, and I guess so too with most people today. So how did two Stanford University students created the search engine that practically ended all other search engines and built a company that is now one of the biggest software companies in the world? With Google’s slogan of “Don’t be evil”, can we trust them to keep our information in its vast databases safe from others? Find out in this video about this company that was rated by Fortune Magazine multiple times as the #1 Best Place to Work, and its drive to become the #1 software company in the world.

Your iPhone or Your Life?

June 26th, 2008 | Comments | Posted in Life, Video, iPhone

For some people, the iPhone has taken away their lives. Make sure it doesn’t happen literally.

A surveillance video inside a bus in Columbus, OH, caught on tape a hooded teen lunging on a man who was wearing headphones and beating him up when he tried to hang on to his iPhone. Interestingly, nobody tried to do something and stop the attack… not even the driver of the bus.

This is nothing new in my country. Many passengers in buses, jeepneys and tricycles have become victims of public transportation robberies, some mercilessly killed while trying to hang on to their valued possessions. The usual targets are cellphones, bags, jewelries and sometimes laptops. Robbers usually work in teams, some acting as lookouts to watch for anyone who will try to help other passengers. Deployed policemen in civilian clothes inside these transportations have not deterred these crimes and some resulted in shootouts inside the buses. I always tell my children that nothing is worth hanging on to except their lives.

So, luckily for this guy on the video, he was only beaten up and still end up holding his precious iPhone.

Excellent Digital Painting Video Tutorial for Beginners

June 23rd, 2008 | Comments | Posted in Digital Painting, Video, photoshop

If you’re a noob in digital painting and struggling to create your first digital masterpiece, you need a very good video tutorial to get you up to speed fast. Otherwise, you will quickly run into problems and get frustrated fast. I have tried many tutorials on the web but a lot of them assume you already know what settings to use for paint brushes in Photoshop, such as what size, shape, opacity and flow, and how to apply colors, textures and blending to your painting. Other video tutorials were recorded several times faster than normal or recorded without sounds so you wouldn’t really learn from them. More »

Ever since I saw Keanu Reeves in Scanner Darkly, I have tried turning photos into cartoons in Adobe Photoshop. It takes me more than 30 minutes just to “cartoonize” a face with not so great results. Then I stumbled upon befunky.com! This piece of gem is an online application that converts pictures (and videos soon) into Scanner Darkly type graphics–in a minute. It’s also free! More »

How Watching Old Films Help Us Prepare For Our Future

June 19th, 2008 | Comments | Posted in Life

I recently came across two old documentary films about the place of my birth. Watching these movies were like traveling back in time but never quite leaving from where I am.

70 years ago, those people were living their lives, unsure of what the future may bring. Those were people who have been released from the oppressive Spanish colonial rule and many are looking forward to better opportunities under the American colonial regime. The air smells of progress brought about by the new horseless carriages and new factories, imported chocolates and other American goodies. Philippine Independence was just around the corner. Smiles were everywhere. Still some go about their lives neither optimistic nor pessimistic, just unmindful of the bigger forest that provides some shade on their small weary lives. More »

How to Fix WordPress.com Blog Stats Plug-In Problem

June 18th, 2008 | Comments | Posted in WordPress

One of the most useful features of WordPress.com is the Blog Stats. Although, there are similar plug-ins one can use for the self-hosted WordPress blog, I still prefer the simple and less overwhelming stats from WordPress.com. So I was happy to know that there exists a plug-in exactly like that for my self-hosted blog. More »

Beautifully Designed Green Buildings

Apeiron, Dubai

Everyday we hear of economic, social and environmental problems like the weatherman warns of an impending storm. For as long as we’re sure that behind the darkest clouds lies the sun shining and that the rainbow will come after the rain, there is no need to press the panic button. That may be true some decades ago. Today, we have contributed so much harm to our environment that we are in danger of losing the ecological balance that sustains life. We are no longer sure that our sun will continue to provide that wonderful ray of hope for life or a deadly radiation of death. But it is not too late. We can all make a difference in the future of our family, our city and our planet by going Green. More »

How to Watch Hi-Res YouTube Videos Online

June 17th, 2008 | Comments | Posted in Video

Ok, so there is this nice Fathers Day video on YouTube that shows every father’s ultimate toys–Lambos and Ferraris–being pulled-over by cops. Sad thing is, just like most YouTube videos, it’s like watching old silent movies with sound. There is actually a neat trick that you can use to make these videos look much better. Just add “&fmt=6″ to the end of the video URL.

Here’s a regular YouTube Video:

Here’s the same video with the “&fmt=6″ added to the URL:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FoFmHbv4hYk&fmt=6

Videos that are already optimized will no longer benefit from this trick. It’s not HD, but hey, at least you can now view your favorite YouTube videos on a different light.

Warning: When making your own home videos for YouTube, check your nose in the mirror first!
