Apple released the newest version of its Web browser, Safari 4.0.2. According to Apple, the update improves the stability of the Nitro JavaScript engine plus some compatibility and security fixes.
The 40 MB update is available via Mac OS X’s Software Update.
WordPress.org has finally released WordPress 2.8.1 fixing several bugs in 2.8, tightens security for plugin administration pages (certain plugins could be viewed by unprivileged users), and a host of other changes such as the following:
Certain themes were calling get_categories() in such a way that it would fail in 2.8. 2.8.1 works around this so these themes won’t have to change.
Dashboard memory usage is reduced. Some people were running out of memory when loading the dashboard, resulting in an incomplete page.
The automatic upgrade no longer accidentally deletes files when cleaning up from a failed upgrade.
A problem where the rich text editor wasn’t being loaded due to compression issues has been worked around.
Extra security has been put in place to better protect you from plugins that do not do explicit permission checks.
Translation of role names fixed.
wp_page_menu() defaults to sorting by the user specified menu order rather than the page title.
Upload error messages are now correctly reported.
Autosave error experienced by some IE users is fixed.
Styling glitch in the plugin editor fixed.
SSH2 filesystem requirements updated.
Switched back to curl as the default transport.
Updated the translation library to avoid a problem with mbstring.func_overload.
Stricter inline style sanitization.
Stricter menu security.
Disabled code highlighting due to browser incompatibilities.
RTL layout fixes.
The easiest and fastest way to upgrade is to use the Automatic Update plugin if you have it or you can go to WordPress.org to download and manually install the upgrade.
While GeoHot has already released his jailbreaking tools called Purplera1n for the iPhone 3GS on both Windows and Mac platforms, the iPhone Dev-Team followed suit today with an updated Redsn0w 0.8 after initially announcing that they will wait for the iPhone firmware 3.1. This Redsn0w 0.8 release can jailbreak the iPhone 2G, 3G and 3GS, and both the iPod Touch 1st and 2nd Gen, plus support for Winterboard. It is availbale for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux operating systems. The Ultrasn0w unlocking tool has also been updated to version 0.8 to support the iPhone 3GS.
Purplera1n for the Mac has just been released by GeoHot. It has basically the same instructions as the Windows version that you can find in this video tutorial.
From GeoHot’s bog:
You asked for it, and we delivered. I’m not a mac coder, so AriX and westbaer stepped up to do it. Check out AriX’s blog here. Download link on purplera1n.com, and thank AriX and westbaer next time you see them!
Also, some more payload stability improvements were made, and the windows version was updated to RC2a. There is no reason to run RC2a if you already have RC2 installed.
So again, if you can’t wait for the iPhone Dev-Team’s own jailbreaking tool for the iPhone 3GS, this is a great alternative—it’s easy and fast too!
Note: Many are reporting that this doesn’t work on Mac OS X Tiger… and like in the Windows version, Winterboard also doesn’t work.
As I reported in an earlier article, while the Dev-Team has released Ultrasn0w to unlock the iPhone 3GS, it won’t be able to do a jailbreak. Without a jailbreak, there’s no way to use Ultrasn0w to unlock (Ultrasn0w can unlock the iPhone 3G by using PwnageTool or Redsn0w).
Although the Dev-Team has already identified an exploit to do a jailbreak for the iPhone 3GS, they decided not to release a tool until Apple releases the iPhone OS version 3.1 expected in a month. The Dev-Team is apparently afraid that Apple will be able to identify and close the exploit in 3.1.
Well, GeoHot, a former member of the Dev-Team, has released an iPhone 3GS jailbreaking tool called Purplera1n. Since this is an initial release, some applications in Cydia such as Winterboard won’t work. While Purplera1n initially only works with Windows XP, a second release makes it now possible to work on Windows Vista and Windows 7 with international and 64-bit support. No Mac version yet.
So if you can’t wait for the Dev-Team, follow the video below on how to jailbreak the iPhone 3GS using GeoHot’s Purplera1n and the second video to unlock it using the Dev-Team’s Ultrasn0w.
How to Jailbreak the iPhone 3GS Using Purplera1n (Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7):
How to Unlock the iPhone 3G and 3GS Using Ultrasn0w (Windows or Mac):

Too bad, I still have the original iPhone 2G. Anyone willing to gift me with the new iPhone 3GS? I wish…
Michael Jackson is gone but his memory has been immortalized through his music. Then, there is the other MJ whose virtuoso on the playing court produces a different kind of music, but has the same mesmerizing effect to his worldwide audience. Obviously, the other MJ I’m speaking of is no other than the greatest basketball [...]
The iPhone Dev-Team has verified that the exploit earlier found in the iPod Touch 2G, called 24kpwn, has been left unpatched by Apple and is still applicable to the bootrom of the iPhone 3GS.
The wait is over for all iPhone 3G users to unlock their jailbroken phones who previously applied yellowsn0w. The iPhone Dev-Team has fnally released their much awaited new tool—Ultrasn0w. Although Ultrasn0w should also be able to unlock the new iPhone 3G S, there is still no tool to make the required jailbreak before an unlock [...]
It’s been ages since I last posted an article on digital painting and my Wacom tablet has been gathering dust. But ever since I saw that particular cover on The New Yorker, I immediately downloaded the iPhone application that was responsible for creating it.
